  • Surprises at American Idol Grand Finale

“The show must go on!” — P.T. Barnum, “Great American Showman”

Expect an evening that will amaze and surprise! American Idol has taken unprecedented measures amidst the pandemic to see this season through to the end. Broadcasting live remotely from locations across the country, Season 18‘s grand finale will feature… top star performances… return of past Idol contestants… and the crowning of the next American Idol.

A new and very different grand finale is in store. No extravaganza in front of a live audience. No showering of confetti when the winner is announced. Yet the show will not disappoint. The finale will begin by revealing the Top 5. Each finalist will perform two songs remotely from their homes… a song of celebration and a song they have previously sung on Idol. America will vote live during the show… and the Idol winner for Season 18 will be crowned by host Ryan Seacrest. The new American Idol will then debut their official new single for the first time.

While voting, America will be entertained by top name performers. The three Idol judges will each perform… Katy Perry singing her new hit “Daisies” and Luke Bryan singing his hit… “One Margarita”. The evening’s all-star line-up will also feature…
    • Cynthia Erivo singing a medley of songs from legendary Aretha Franklin
    • Lauren Daigle, former Idol contestant, singing her hit song “You Say”
    • Rascal Flatts joined by Doug Kiker singing “Bless the Broken Road”

Perhaps the biggest surprise is Lionel Richie‘s announcement that he will sing “We Are the World”… the triple Grammy winning hit he wrote with Michael Jackson 35 years ago as a charity song for U.S.A. for Africa famine relief. A line-up of top music artists of the era performed the song together in 1985 including…
    • Richie, Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Kenny Rogers, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

In honor of all the families at home around the world now, Richie will perform “We Are the World” at the finale along with Perry, Bryan and a cast of former Idol contestants including…
    • Alejandro Aranda, Gabby Barrett, Jordin Sparks, Katharine McPhee, Kellie Pickler, Laine Hardy, Lauren Alaina, Phillip Phillips, Ruben Studdard and Scotty McCreery.

The grand finale of American Idol is set to be a memorable evening… and one not to be missed! It will air live Eastern time Sunday, May 17th. Next day streaming will be available on HULU.
